When my good friend Scott returned from his trip to San Francisco he handed me a book titled Logicomix. Having no idea what it was, I read the inside flap to discover, and then exclaim
"This is a graphic novel about Bertrand Russell!"
Not just a graphic novel about Bertrand Russell, but a damn good one at that. In the sense that these are presented in the book, I was a mathematical and logical layperson, yet I found no trouble reading it in one sitting. And apart from how engaging it was, I couldn't get over how funny it was. Wittgenstein's presentation in particular had me in tears. If you are at all interested in the history of twentieth century mathematics and logic, I highly recommend you pick up Logicomix. You will learn and laugh a great deal.
D'Souza vs Singer
Next month I am going to see Dinesh D'Souza and Peter Singer debate about god and morality. I have not seen Singer debate yet, which is why I am interested in attending. I am trying to finish his Writings on an Ethical Life before the debate so I will have a context to frame his arguments. I have seen D'Souza (debate Hitchens) online many times, and think his arguments for his case are totally unconvincing. It has become somewhat painful to even hear him speak at this point, as I have developed an association with his voice and unreasonable vacuity. So while I look forward to Singer, listening to D'Souza carries with it a real liability. If nothing is posted for a week after the debate (September 13th), it is because my brain, having realized the impossibility of escape, self-induced an aneurysm and I am dead. You can't blog when you're dead.
