I've been working my way through Jonathan Glover's Humanity: A Moral History of the Twentieth Century. Reading it can be quite emotionally draining. I cried a little bit after reading his section on the war crimes committed at My Lai during the Vietnam war. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to better understand the psychology of people at war.
I am going to be spending most of this coming weekend at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, courtesy of my new roommate Claire. (Oh yeah, I'm moving this month!) We're going to see several films, one is a personal favorite, some I've never heard of. This seems like a good time to regale you with an anecdote of a previous trip to BAM!
So, we went to go see what is ostensibly the Portuguese director, Joao Cesar Monteiro's final film. In it, there is a scene where the protagonist undergoes surgery to remove a dildo the size of my thigh from his anus. I am a little squeamish around this sort of material to begin with. To the film's credit, the scene really wasn't very explicit, but it gave the audience enough to allow their minds to fill in the rest, and mine did. Additionally, I had not eaten much that day. So when the nausea came, I stood up and began searching for the most elusive restroom in the world. In actuality it was in plain sight, but the first thing I noticed upon exiting the theater was that I could hardly see a thing. It was as though a blue and yellow filter veiled my vision. I made it to the lobby before finally collapsing onto the tile floor (my knees hurt for days!). Fortunately, some patrons rushed to help me up and guided me to the restroom. After the film, my friends and I went to get some food and I felt much better. In a weird way, I enjoyed the experience (forgetting the nausea for a moment). It felt really good to have strangers rush to my aid and care for me. Don't get me wrong, I am not interested in going through it again, and Claire temporarily lost her film recommendation privileges.

oh man! I almost threw up watching "the Audition" at Film Forum, and had to leave the theater.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it amazing when a movie has such a visceral effect?
